***For the purposes of this blog, please assume the roles of students in my 12th grade history class. This blog is where I would post homework assignments and general announcements***
Later in the semester you will all be expected to research and write a paper about one of the topics discussed in class. Since this is the second week of school I do not expect you to have chosen topics yet. Right now I am interested to learn how much you know about conducting research on the Internet.
We will have a detailed discussion on Thursday but for now I want you to find at least one website or page that you think is an appropriate source for a research paper (an academic source).
Please provide a link to your source as well as a brief explanation as to why you think it qualifies.
Please post your findings here. I do NOT want to see duplicate sites or information. The Internet is a big place- there is more than enough variety for each of you to find a unique site or page.
These sources do not need to be directly related to your yet-to-be-chosen topic, but please keep them relevant to Social Studies (which covers a lot more than just History).
If you really want to impress me, you could also include a bibliographic citation of the source.
-We will also be discussing correct citation practices later this week.

ABSTRACT: This book explores the important and barely examined connections between the humanitarian concerns embedded in the religious heritage of Jewish American artists and the appeal of radical political causes between the years of the Great Migration from Eastern Europe in the 1880s and the beginning of World War II in the late 1930s. Visual material consists primarily of political cartoons published in leftwing Yiddish- and English-language newspapers and magazines. Artists often commented on current events using biblical and other Jewish references, meaning that whatever were their political concerns, their Jewish heritage was ever present. By the late 1940s, the obvious ties between political interests and religious concerns largely disappeared. The text, set against events of the times--the Russian Revolution, the Depression and the rise of fascism during the 1930s as well as life on New York's Lower East Side--includes artists'statements as well as the thoughts of religious, literary, and political figures ranging from Marx to Trotsky to newspaper editor Abraham Cahan to contemporary art critics including Meyer Schapiro.
Wasn't expecting a full annotation, fantastic! I plan to assign annotated bibliographies in my real future classes. They're great for teaching research skills without adding the anxiety and stress that comes with actually having to write a research paper.

ReplyDeleteThis is a website that is designed to explain the beliefs and the views taken on certain topics by both the Republicans and Democrats. I think this would be a great source to use if one was researching and writing a paper on either of the two political parties. The site also provides other articles for the individual to read on different issues. The site gives unbiased information of the views of both sides.

This is a website that looks at every candidate that is still currently in the presidential race as well as other that were in the presidential race as far back as of June 2015. I think a website like this gives you a really good starting block for you to start your research on who you will be giving your vote too and why you will be giving he or she your vote.

ReplyDeleteThis is a website with an unlimited amount of information, from world history and culture to religion and sports. If a student is looking for the perfect photo, film, etc. pertaining to any topic that falls under the Social Studies umbrella. Also, if a student is having a hard time deciding what to do their research on, this website will offer several options for him or her to choose from.
Great! A lot of libraries have digital archives and online databases now. It's wonderful to know that the library is still one of the best places for research.
